On Beauty
Beauty is an energy, not an image, and that energy can go anywhere; that energy takes on an image, a form, many images, many forms.” J. Ruth Gendler, Notes on the Need for Beauty
I hope I’m preaching to the converted when I remind you that beauty is functional, that beauty can change behavior.
It is a gorgeous summer/fall day here in Portland. The morning sun is shining through the leaves of the trees outside my windows and making all these great shadows on the walls and floors of my office/studio. My workspace is clean, pleasant and inviting.
And while a good night’s sleep is contributing a good deal to my positive mood and energy, I also know it is the result of the beauty that surrounds me this morning.
Beauty matters. Beauty is worth cultivating.

What do you do to surround yourself with beauty? How does that change your behavior? Do you find it makes your work easier and more enjoyable?
